MMW’s early beginnings were in the forestry and fishing sectors. As other business settled in the area, the company diversified, adding specialized industry expertise to service the oil and gas and heavy industrial sectors.

In the early 1970s oil and gas exploration off the coast of Nova Scotia was well underway, as was pulp and paper, oil refining, heavy water and ship building. As a result, MMW quickly grew to become a leading metal fabrication facility servicing Eastern Canada. As the workforce and expertise grew, so did the service offerings with a fabrication shop and machine shop supporting remote locations, such as oil rigs. Over the years, MMW has provided crews to the rigs, whether they were offshore, anchored or jacked up in the harbour, or dockside. Providing this service was the key selling point to “around the clock service” that we still maintain today.

As the offshore oil and gas activity subsided in the mid 1980s, MMW kept pace by maintaining its original goal of being a diversified organization. In doing this, the company was able to work with many industry operators, both new and existing. MMW provided custom manufactured goods and services to many projects such as the expansion and upgrades to several power generation plants, local steel plant and pulp mills, mines and aggregate quarries and a world class oil trans shipment facility. Some of the manufactured items included pressure vessels, bulk storage tanks and silos, high and low pressure piping, pipe racks, flare booms, pedways, stairs, ladders and elevated walkways.

The early 1990s saw the return of the oil and gas industry to Nova Scotia. This time the industry was in production mode as opposed to exploration. MMW signed a multi-million dollar contract with the operator of the first offshore Nova Scotia oil production platform to manufacture 5 modular units. Once installed, these units became the entire production and processing centre for the Cohasset-Panuke oil fields.

Also during the 1990s, MMW continued to service all facets of industry including the provision of offshore work crews. In the late 1990s, the oil and gas industry expanded by seeing start of the Sable Offshore Energy Project. MMW became heavily involved in Tier 1 and Tier 2 of the project. Additionally, the company became more involved in the new production topsides by manufacturing modularized equipment and pressure vessels, which were multi-disciplined and turnkey in nature.

Since its humble beginnings in 1969, MMW has experienced tremendous growth locally, nationally and internationally. In 2004, the company expanded to a larger and more modern location within the town of Mulgrave (our current location). This investment demonstrates the company’s commitment to its customers, it employees and its community in an ever-changing global marketplace.

We can't wait to see what the future holds for us here in Mulgrave, and we thank all of those who've been there along the way.
